Age of Consent by Peter Morris
Consisting of two interlinked monologues, The Age of Consent delves into the
psyche of two characters. Timmy is a teenage killer on the brink of being
released from his youth offenders institution, having killed an infant boy years
before. Stephanie is an abusive single mother who is keen to get her young
daughter into showbiz, and ends up delivering her straight into the hands of a
paedophile. Peter Morriss monologue about a teenage killer has eerie echoes
with the killers of James Bulger, as the playwright imagines what Thompson or
Venables would be like now. The play looks at how we define childhood and
what it is to be a child in todays society.
The Age of Consent premiered at the Pleasance Theatre, Edinburgh, in August
2001.

EXTRACT
Timmy
Sometimes you see something and it just, it might
be wrong, it might be flashy, it might just make no
sense but you just have to . . . look . . . like
fireworks, or Torvill and Dean, or just the colours in
a puddle where theres petrol split . . . and you just
look.
I dont know if I knew what it was . . . they . . .
Like when a toy stops going.
He just . . .
Broken.
He stopped making noise. He stopped moving.
And it was like something was gone.
And I took the battery, its not what they said, I just .
. . I put it in his mouth, thats where I put it.
Because I thought maybe hed come back . . . come
back on, hed start moving.
It wasnt dirty . . . it was just . . .
And thats when she was wandering around,
screaming, while we were doing that.
And I know what she mustve sounded like, looked
like . . .
Terrible.
She wasnt beautiful the way a mum should be, I
ruined her, I put her there.
But were both paying for the same five minutes for
the rest of our lives.
