KEY INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS

• MohawkRigidVinylPlankooringisintendedforinterioruseonlyandissuitableforabovegrade,ongrade,andbelowgradeapplications.DO NOT

installinanyoutsideareas,saunas,seasonalporches,campingtrailers,boats,RVs,lanais,roomsthatarepronetoooding,orroomsorhomesthatarenot

temperature-controlled.

growthofmoldorpreventstructuralproblemsassociatedwith,orcausedbyooding,excessivemoisture,alkalisinthesuboor,orconditionsarisingfrom

hydrostaticpressure.Regardlessoflocation,alwaysremovestandingwater,urineandotherliquidspromptly.Jobsitemoistureissuesshouldbeaddressed

andcorrectedpriortoinstallation.Fillexpansionspacesaroundpotentialwetareasonlywithpremiumwaterproof100%siliconecaulk.

• Long-termexposuretodirectsunlightcanpotentiallydamageMohawkRigidVinylPlankooring,causingittodiscolor,fade,orbuckle.ProtectMohawk

RigidVinylPlankooringfromexposuretodirectsunlightviatheuseofwindow-treatmentsorUV-tintingonwindows.

• Iftheooringistobeinstalledbyathirdparty,thenitissuggestedthatthehomeownerbepresentduringtheinstallationforconsultation/direction.The

ownerandinstallershoulddiscussinstallationandlayouttomaximizesatisfaction.Ifthisisnotpossible,consultationshouldoccurpriortoinstallation.The

owner/installerassumesallresponsibilityforqualityofcompletedinstallation.

BEFORE STARTING

BeforebeginningaMohawkRigidVinylPlankooringinstallationproject,itiscriticalthatyou1)fullyacquaintyourselfwiththedetailedinstallation

• DeterminethequantityofMohawkRigidVinylPlankoorings,ooringtransitionsandwalltrimneededforyourinstallation.Itisrecommendedthatyou

addanadditional10%toyoursquarefootageforstandardinstallationstoaccountforcuts.Fordiagonalinstallations,add15%.

• Makesureyouhavetheappropriateinstallationtools.Alistofrecommendedinstallationtoolscanbefoundinthe“ToolsRequiredforInstallation”section

ofthisguide.

• Cartonsshouldbeevenlystackednomorethanvecartonshighonaatsurfaceandawayfromanyheating/coolingductsordirectsunlight.

Priortoinstallation,thehomeownerorinstallermustensurethatjobsiteconditions(including suboor/ substrate, ambient temperature and relative humidity)willnot

negativelyaffecttheoor.Themanufacturerisnotresponsiblefordamagesassociatedwithimproperinstallationorpoorsiteconditions.

A. Thesurfaceofthesuboormustbeat.Theatnessrequirementisdenedasfollows:themaximumdifferencebetweentwohighpointsandthe

intermediatelowpointis1/4”ina10’radius.Surfaceatnessmustalsonotvarymorethan1/16”whenmeasuredwitha3’straightedge.Additionally,the

suboormustnotslopemorethan1”in6’.

B. Highareascanbesanded,grounddownoroatedoverwithanapprovedself-levelingcompound.Fillexcessivevoidsorlowareasusinganon-gypsum,

cementitiousbasedlevelingcompound.AllowthelevelingcompoundtodrythoroughlybeforebeginningtheMohawkRigidVinylPlankooring

installation.Followthemanufacturer’sinstructionstobesureitisappropriatefortheapplication.

C. Suboorsmustbestructurallysoundwithoutdeection.

G. Removeanyexistingoatingorun-adheredooring.

I. Inspecteveryplankforanyshippingdamagewhenremovingfromthecarton.

• Performmoisturetestsatlocationsaroundexteriordoorways,nearwallscontainingplumbing,nearfoundationwallsandinthecenteroftheroom.

• Highspotscanberemovedbygrinding;depressionscanbelledwithpatchingcompoundformulatedforuseinoorinstallation.

• WoodsuboorsmustbeA.P.A.approvedwithaminimumgradeof“BB”or“CC”.Forreference,A.P.A.istheacronymforanorganizationoriginallyknownas

the“AmericanPlywoodAssociation”,andthatisnowknownas“TheEngineeredWoodAssociation”.

• Performmoisturetestsusingareliablemoisturemeterinmultiplelocations.Moisturereadingsshouldneverexceed14%forplywood,OSB,particleboard,

chipboardandsolidhardwoodsuboors.Ifmoisturereadingsexceed14%,itshouldbecorrectedatthejobsitebeforeinstallingMohawkRigidVinylPlank.

• Adheredandsoundvinylsheetgoods,linoleumandresilient(VCT)tiles:Oldvinylandlinoleumtilesorsheetgoodsnormallydonotneedtoberemoved

iftheyarefullybondedandfreeofanynotabledamage.Someoldervinylsheetgoodsandtilecontainasbestos.Shoulditcontainasbestosspecial

precautionsmustbetakenforyoursafety.Contactaprofessionalimmediatelyforinspectionandremoval.

• Ceramictilesandterrazzo:Oldatceramictilesnormallydon’tneedtoberemoved.Groutjointswiderthan¼”mustbelled.Usually,MohawkRigidVinyl

Plankooringproductscanbeinstalleddirectlyoverceramictilesandterrazzoprovidingtheyarefullyadhered,smooth,soundanddry.Theseooring

materialsmustbesmoothandattowithin1/4”ina10’radiusandmustnotvarymorethan1/16”whenmeasuredwitha3’straightedge.

• Temperatureswithintheroommustbemaintainedbetween0°Fto140°F(-18°C to 60°C).

• Theseextremerangesbetween0°Fto45°F(-18°C to 7°C)and115°Fto140°F(46°C to 60°C)areforunoccupiedenvironmentsonly.Occupiedareasaswellas

theinstallationneedtobecontrolledbetween45°Fto115°F(7°C to 46°C).

• A1/4”(6 mm)expansionspacemustbeprovidedaroundtheperimeteroftheroomandanyxedobjectssuchaspipesorcolumns.

• Wheninstallingooringfromtwoormorecartons,checkthepattern,colorandbatchnumbersonthe

cartontoensuretheyareallthesame.Thisinformationislistedontheexteriorlabelofeachcarton.Itis

recommendedtoblendooringfrommultiplecartonsduringinstallation.

• Cartonsshouldbeevenlystackednomorethanvecartonshighonaatsurfaceandawayfromany

heating/coolingductsordirectsunlight.

• Excessooringshouldbestoredinaprotectedclimatecontrolledenvironmentforfuturerepairsifnecessary.

• Powertoolscanbedangerous.Operateinstrictaccordancewithmanufacturer’soperatinginstructionsandsafetyprecautions.Unsafeandimproperusecan

causeseriousinjuries.Avoidinhalationandexposuretoairborneparticlesbywearingpersonalprotectiveequipment,including:NIOSHorOSHAapproved

dustmasks,safetygogglesandworkgloves.

1. Inspecteachplank.Floorshouldbeinstalledblendingplanksfromseveralcartonsatthesametimetoensuregoodcolorandshademixturethroughout

theinstallation.

Lastplanksofrowsmustbeatleast8”long.

Note:Useaspareplanktocreateastraightedgeatthecutline.Useautilityknifetoscorethetopofthepatternandsnapthepanel.Itwillbenecessarytocut

thefoamunderlaymentaftersnappingthepanel.

6. Startthesecondrowofooringbytrimmingaplanktoalengthdifferentfromtherstplankintherstrow.Firstandlastpiecesmustbeatleast8”long.

Endjointsshouldbestaggeredaminimumof6”.

7. Ataslightangle,insertthelongedgetongueoftherstplankinrow2intothelongedgegrooveoftheplankinrow1untiltheplankedgesmeet,and

thenrotatedownuntilthejointslock.

8. Whenjoiningthenextplanktotherstplankintherow,jointheshortsideedgesrst.Therewillbeagaponthelongsidejointswhentheplank

isrotateddown.

9. Raisetheoutsidelongedgeoftheplankupwardapproximately1”.Thiswillraisetheoutsidelongedgeofplanksinthatrow.Maintainthisangleasyou

15. Whenthenewooringmeetsathresholdoradoorway,werecommendundercuttingthedoorjamb.Tosecuretherightcut,turnaplankupsidedownand

placeitontheooruptothedoorframe.Thenplaceareciprocatingsawatagainsttheplankandsimplycutthroughtheframe.Removethecut-outpiece

andvacuumawaydebris.Slideplankunderpre-cutdoorframe.Doorframeshouldbecutsothata¼”(6 mm)gapislocatedfromtheedgeoftheplank

underthecasingtothewall.

16. Tapthelongsidejointclosedrst,thentaptheendjointclosed.

17. Allow¼”(6 mm)expansionspacearoundpipesorotherxedobjects.

18. Inrowswherethereisapipe,makesurethepipefallsexactlyinlinewiththeshortsideoftwoplanks.Selectadrillbitwiththesamediameterasthepipe

plus1/2inch(13 mm).Clicktheplankstogetherontheshortsideanddrillaholecenteredonthejointbetweenthetwoplanks.Theninstalltheplanks.

19. Foradoublepipe,drillaholeequivalenttothediameterofthepipeplus1/2inch(13 mm)ateachofthemarkedpoints.Iflocatedonthelongsideofthe
