the harvest. The critical support that the
Foundation provides is, well, becoming
even more critical in these times.
Difcult scal times and increasing
demands combine to place even more
in the hands of our few labourers. For
those in public service, there comes
a time when you face the reality that
despite your labour, you can’t do
everything. That is often a bitter pill for
all of us. When we get to that point,
knowing that there are supports like
the Foundation on this journey makes a
tremendous difference.
On behalf of our close to 17,000
students and 1,900 staff, I express our
deep gratitude to the Foundation, its
board, and you—our supporters—for
your deep commitment to Catholic
education. Indeed, you put into action
that which you believe. You sacrice
your time, talent and treasure to help
bring a truly Catholic education to our
community. The harvest is plentiful, and
our labourers are working diligently. You
are an important part of our team. We
can’t thank you enough for your help! In
our lifetime, we will likely not see much
of the fruit borne from the seeds that
are planted this year. But with you, we
labour on, condent in the guidance of
the Holy Spirit to bring forth a harvest—
thirty, sixty, even a hundredfold.
When one works
in public service or
the not-for-prot
sector, particularly
with a Christian
organization,
one often hears
how busy things
can be, and that
comment may
often include a
vague reference to Luke 10:2, “The
harvest is plenty but the labourers are
few.” While the context of Jesus’s words
is to provide more vocations, I think the
verse has great signicance to Greater
Saskatoon Catholic Schools this year.
The harvest is plenty. Our division
continues to grow. We serve 300
additional students this
year (around two per cent growth),
and we anticipate at least that again
next year. As you likely know, we are in
the midst of building six new schools in
our division: four in Saskatoon, one in
Martensville and one in Warman—the
rst Catholic schools in the latter two
cities. The elds for harvest are indeed
growing!
Additionally, the elds in which our
harvest (or our ministry) is happening
continues to change and challenge us
in new ways. The needs of the people
in our community, and the ways in
which we minister to them, seems
to be constantly shifting. One does
not need to look very hard at what is
happening in our society to see the
effects of these changes. However,
indicators like growing student
enrolment and a growing number
of Catholics in our world tell us the
unceasing relevance of the Gospel.
The harvest is indeed plenty!
The labourers are few. At times I wish
I could add a few hours to the day—
many times. Although we could always
accomplish more with more time or
people, we are truly blessed with many
committed labourers—staff, parents
and volunteers who work to bring life
to the mission of Catholic education
each and every day. We are totally
dependent on you for this work. We
do have a need and a responsibility
to support our students in their faith
journey—to help them grow to become
the best disciples possible. The work
can be arduous, but many hands make
light work. Pray for more labourers.
Financial resources help provide labour,
but the stark reality is that our resources
are not keeping up with the increase in
